In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the President of the European Parliament has established a number of measures to contain the spread of the virus and to safeguard Parliament's core activities. The current precautionary measures do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are maintained to ensure the smooth running of the institution's legislative, budgetary, and scrutiny functions.

The next ITRE Committee meeting will take place on Monday 6 December 2021, 13.45 - 16.45 remotely and in the room Spaak 3C50 in Brussels.

With the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, the need to keep in contact with one another have been stronger then ever before. The hearing addressed European digital connectivity goals, the barriers and difficulties in 5G rollout with the aim of effective 6G transition, building the fiber connectivity infrastructures, spectrum management and spectrum access.

The public hearing that will take place on 6 December 2021 will cover topics such as the prioritization of investments and reforms in research and innovation towards the green and digital transition to support Europe's recovery; strengthening mobility of researchers and free flow of knowledge and technology through greater cooperation among Member States; boosting market uptake of research and innovation results and improving access to excellence for researchers across the EU.

The ITRE Committee is organising an ad-hoc delegation of five committees (ITRE/IMCO/CULT/JURI/LIBE) and the STOA panel to the 16th annual meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which will be hosted by the Government of Poland in Katowice from 6-10 December, under the overarching theme: Internet United. The EP has sent a delegation to the IGF since 2005, playing a pivotal role in the promotion of European values and holding substantive exchanges with civil society and other stakeholders.

On 9 November 2021, the ITRE Committee had a public hearing on the “The energy aspects of the Fit for 55 package”. The aim of this hearing was to hold an open dialogue between the Members of the Committee and experts from companies, academia and NGOs about the energy aspects of the Fit for 55 package, which was proposed by the European Commission on 14 July 2021. It focused in particular on the revision of the Energy Efficiency Directive and the Renewable Energy Directive.
