Environmental crimes have become a wide spread phenomenon worldwide and are widely recognised as one of the most profitable forms of transnational criminal activity. Bringing together a wide range of international experts and policy-makers, the workshop, held on 19 May 2022 seek to identify existing gaps in policy and legal responses, and generate debates about how the identified gaps can be filled.

The discussions was organised in two successive sessions: a first panel focused on the prevention and the fight against environmental crime in developing countries. It drew on lessons learned from different developing countries, including best practices and entry points for addressing environmental crimes. The second panel concentrated on the new EC proposal for a Directive on the protection of the environment through criminal law. It discussed possible ways of reinforcing the external dimension of this Directive with the objective of making it more suitable and effective to prevent, prosecute and punish environmental crimes committed in developing countries.
