This public hearing will bring together policymakers, experts and stakeholders to examine the Single Market Strategy, adopted on 21 May 2025 by the European Commission. This strategy aims to strengthen the Single Market by modernising governance, removing barriers, and ensuring consistent implementation across the EU. Renowned academic, former Prime Minister of Italy and former European Commissioner Professor Mario Monti will deliver a keynote speech at this event.

On 25 June 2025, IMCO will hold an exchange of views on the ongoing investigations against e-commerce platforms and will discuss the latest developments. On 26 May 2025, the Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) Network of national consumer authorities and the European Commission, following a coordinated investigation at European level, notified the online marketplace and e-retailer Shein of a number of practices on its platform that infringe EU consumer law.

During the IMCO meeting of 20 May, Members broadly welcomed the progress made on the compromise amendments on product safety and regulatory compliance in e-commerce and non-EU imports. A large majority was reached on key technical elements, including the digitalisation of market surveillance and customs processes through technologies such as AI and block chain, improved consumer transparency on product safety and sustainability.

On 19 May, Members discussed the implementation of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement. The Rapporteur, Sandro Gozi (Renew), presented his draft opinion on the implementation of the EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement emphasizing three key priorities: facilitating cross-border services, ensuring full implementation of the Windsor Framework, and advancing consumer protection.

On 20 May, Members discussed the Customs Union with Commissioner Maros Šefčovič, who highlighted the strategic importance of reforming the Customs Union as a response to evolving trade patterns and the increasing pressure on the integrity of the Single Market. Customs authorities, he noted, act as frontline defenders of the Single Market, ensuring that unsafe and non-compliant goods do not enter the EU.
