Road Safety Package

The Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) will vote its draft report on the Driving Licences Directive, which is part of the Road Safety Package. The directive primarily seeks to improve the road safety through streamlined requirements for novice drivers, accompanied driving schemes as well as provisions related to physical and mental fitness. Another important goal of this piece of legislation is to improve the freedom of movement within the European Union.

Both Rapporteurs (Mr ZŁOTOWSKI and Mr VITANOV) have negotiated a set of compromise amendments which have wide support among the political groups.

The Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) voted its report on ship-source pollution, for which rapporteur Marian-Jean Marinescu (EPP) has negotiated a set of compromise amendments which have extensive support among the political groups. The ship-source pollution file is one of 5 proposals which together form the 'maritime safety package'. TRAN also voted on whether to enter into inter-institutional negotiations.

The Committee on Transport and Tourism discussed the draft report on "Weights and Dimensions", which adapts the maximum permitted weights and dimensions of commercial heavy-duty vehicles, in order to make freight transport more sustainable by encouraging the uptake of zero-emission vehicles and promoting intermodal transport, improve the functioning of the internal market, ensure a fair level playing field and increase road safety.
