Next meeting of the Committee on Budgets

In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting). Other participants are invited to follow the meeting through webstreaming.

Following these decisions, the next BUDG Committee meeting will take place on:

The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) aims to provides support to people losing their jobs as a result of major structural changes in world trade patterns due to globalisation or to the global crisis caused by COVID-19. On 10 May, Members of the Committee on Budgets examined and voted on decision to mobilise the EGF in favour of workers in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands.

Members from the Committee on Budgets and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affair have held the 1st Recovery and Resilience Dialogue with Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President for an Economy that Works for People, and Paolo Gentiloni, Commissioner for Economy.

On Monday 19th April the AFET/DEVE/BUDG committees had the first consideration of the joint implementation report that seeks to make a political evaluation of the EU Trust Funds (EUTFs) established since 2014 and extended until December 2021, as well as the Facility for Refugees in Turkey (FRT).

Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources, presented the funding strategy for the 750 billion euros recovery instrument (Next Generation EU). The instrument will be financed through the issuance of common debt by the European Commission, building on previous experience - notably the recent issuance of social bonds under the Support to mitigate Unemployment Risk in an Emergency (SURE) programme.

On 12 April, the BUDG Committee discussed a draft report from Eider Gardiazabal (S&D) on a proposal to mobilise the European Union Solidarity Fund to provide support to Greece and France for natural disasters and 17 Member States and 3 accession countries for the Covid-19 public health emergency.
