The Committee on International Trade will discuss the request for a waiver from intellectual property (IP) protections under the TRIPS Agreement for the prevention, containment and treatment of COVID-19 within the broader framework of increasing production capacity for vaccines, on 25 May. The Committee will also vote on its report regarding the trade-related aspects and implications of COVID-19. This will be the Committee's main input to the Commission's ongoing Trade Policy Review.
The Committee on Transport and Tourism will go over the updated EU Industrial Strategy with Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton, on 25 May. The updated Strategy seeks to ensure that the EU's industrial ambition takes full account of the new circumstances that have arisen in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and contributes to the transition towards a more sustainable, digital, resilient and globally competitive economy. The debate will focus on the Tourism Ecosystem of the Strategy.
The Committees on Liberty, Justice and Home Affairs and on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality will discuss their report requesting the Commission to propose a Council decision, which identifies gender-based violence as a new area of crime that meets the criteria established under Article 83(1) TFEU. The Committees will also hold a debate on occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Istanbul Convention, focusing on the impact of the withdrawal of Turkey. The meeting will take place on 25 May.
Russia’s military and hybrid activities in the EU and its immediate neighbourhood will be analysed throughout several debates set to be held by the Subcommittee on Security and Defence, on 25 May. The Committee will also hold a debate with Deputy Defence Minister of the Czech Republic, Jan Havránek, on the attacks against the ammunition depot perpetrated by Russian Intelligence services in Vrbětice, Czech Republic.
The Committees on Economic and Monetary Affairs and on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety will hold a public hearing on sustainable finance, in order to take stock of the work that has been done so far in this field and acquire expert insight on current issues. The hearing will take place on 26 May, ahead of the Commission’s Renewed Sustainable Finance Strategy, which is due to be adopted later on this year.
The Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in a Digital Age and the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs will hold a hearing on AI and the labour market, on 25 May. The debates will focus on issues including adapting the labour market to fast progressing digitalisation and increasing deployment of AI, responding to the emergence of new jobs or disappearance of existing ones, ensuring that people have the right skills, and the impact of AI on the workplace and the future of work.
A workshop titled “Three years after #MeToo - what needs to be done? A call for reforms to avoid sexual harassment in EU institutions”, will be held for the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, on 25 May. The Committee will also hold a public hearing with experts on the socio-economic position of women, focusing on the experiences of women of African, Middle-eastern and Asian race, descent or cultural backgrounds, who live in the EU.
A workshop will be held for the Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Committee on Culture and Education in order to look into the progress that has been made to include human rights in the organisation of large sports events. The debates will also focus on the role of the EU in promoting further steps towards a rights-based approach to large sporting competitions.
A workshop for the Committee of Inquiry on the Protection of Animals during Transport will be held on 25 May in order to look into the issue of animal welfare during transport. The topics of discussion will focus on reports submitted by experts on the following: the particular welfare needs of unweaned animals, pregnant animals, and aquatic animals; welfare on sea vessels and criteria for approval of vessel authorisation; and animal welfare practices during transport in third countries.
