The Committee on Budgets, in association with the Committee on Development, held a public hearing on the "Implementation and Financing of COVAX: Successes, Challenges and Lessons for the Future". The hearing focused on the current state of play, mechanisms in place and the current and possible future financial needs of the COVAX initiative. It sought to understand how EU financing has supported vaccine research, production and distribution efforts.

The experts who shared their insights were:
For the 1st panel on the support for vaccination campaigns:
  • Mr Ted Chaiban, Global Lead Coordinator for the COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership
  • Dr John Nkengasong, Director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Ms Lisa Goerlitz, Head of the EU Office of the Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung
For the 2nd panel on the financing and delivering of vaccines through COVAX:
  • Ms Chiara Adamo, Director for Human Development, Migration, Governance and Peace (acting), Directorate-General for International Partnerships, European Commission
  • Mr Seth Berkley, CEO of GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance
  • Dr Katherine O'Brien, Director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals, World Health Organization
