In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the President of the European Parliament has established a number of measures to contain the spread of the virus and to safeguard Parliament's core activities. The current precautionary measures do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are maintained to ensure the smooth running of the institution's legislative, budgetary, and scrutiny functions.

On 18 May, IMCO held an extraordinary meeting to discuss the main achievements of the recent provisional agreements on the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act in the presence of Cedric O, Secretary of State for the Digital Transition and Electronic Communications, France and who led negotiations under the French presidency.

On 22 April, after 16 hours of long negotiations Parliament and Council reached a provisional political agreement on the Digital Services Act (DSA). Together with the Digital Markets Act, DSA forms the pillar of unprecedented digital regulation that defines a framework suited to the challenges posed by the emergence of digital giants and the protection of their users, while maintaining a balance conducive to innovation in the digital economy.

At the committee meeting of 17 May 2022, Mr. Alex Agius Saliba (S&D) reported back from the first trilogue, held on 10 May 2022, on the proposal amending Directive 2014/53/EU on the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of radio equipment. The Rapporteur also informed Members that the next trilogue is envisaged to take place at the end of May or the beginning of June 2022.

At its committee meeting of 16 May 2022, IMCO voted in favour of the provisional agreement on the DMA reached at the final trilogue of 24 March 2022. Together with the Digital Services Act, the DMA makes for a competitive, fair, harmonised, and safer digital single market.

On 11 May, the joint IMCO-LIBE Committee considered the draft report by co-rapporteurs Mr. Brando Benifei (IMCO, S&D) and Mr. Dragos Tudorache (LIBE, RENEW) on the Commission’s proposal for an Artificial Intelligence Act. This Act lays down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence, which aim to ensure the free movement of AI-based goods and services, while also safeguarding Union values and fundamental rights.

On 2 and 3 May, IMCO voted on the report by Mr. Ivan Štefanec on the proposal for a Machinery Products regulation. The Regulation is to replace the current Machinery Directive, as the main piece of legislation regulating products made by the mechanical engineering industry.
