Presentation and competencies

The Delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries was set up immediately following the first direct elections to the European Parliament in 1979. From 1994 to 2004, the delegation also covered relations with the Gulf States. Annual meetings are held with the four countries of the region; Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. It should be noted that, to date, no delegation from the Jordanian Parliament has visited the European Parliament. However, H.M. King Hussein and H.M. King Abdullah have visited the European Parliament on several occasions.
In view of the tense situation in the Middle East over the past few  years, several annual meetings with Syria and Lebanon have been held. An electoral observation commission monitored the general elections in Lebanon in 2005.
