EP Press Release of 24 October 2024 on Development MEPs in Guatemala to discuss human development and climate change

A delegation of six MEPs will travel to Guatemala from 28-30 October to review EU development action in the country, with a focus on human development and the impact of climate change.

The six-member delegation will be led by MEP Lukas Mandl (EPP, AT), and will be in Guatemala from 28-30 October. During their visit, the MEPs will focus on two key issues. They will assess the impact of Guatemala's high levels of poverty and social inequality, particularly in rural and indigenous areas of the country, as well as the prevalence of chronic child malnutrition and of violence against women.

MEPs will also consider the consequences of climate change in Guatemala. The country is considered among the 10 most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and MEPs will study the impact of the recurrent and climate-linked humanitarian disasters that trigger displacement and severely hinder the country's development efforts.

While in Guatemala, MEPs will meet with national, EU and global development actors, indigenous community representatives, Guatemalan ministry officials, and members of Guatemala's National Congress. They will also make a number of site visits to projects supported by EU funding dealing with vocational training, local entrepreneurship, gender equality, and poverty reduction.

The delegation is composed of the following members:

  • Mr Lukas MANDL (EPP, AT) - Delegation Chair
  • Mr Gabriel MATO (EPP, ES) (DLAT Chair)
  • Ms Carla TAVARES (S&D, PT)
  • Mr Juan Fernando LÓPEZ AGUILAR (S&D, ES)
  • Mr Hermann TERTSCH (PfE, ES)
  • Ms Diana RIBA I GINER (Greens/EFA, ES) (DCAM Chair)
