European Parliament resolution on the proposal to set up a European Monitoring Centre on Industrial Change

The European Parliament,

A.  having regard to the conclusions of the European Council meetings of 23 and 24 March and 19 and 20 June 2000,

B.  whereas neither the Council nor the Commission approves the idea of setting up a European Monitoring Centre on Industrial Change,

C.  taking the view, like the Council, that no such new body of this type is needed to achieve the strategic objective fixed and that a decentralised approach based on the subsidiarity principle will be employed,

1.  Endorses the decision taken by the European Council and the Commission to reject the proposal to set up a European Monitoring Centre on Industrial Change;

2.  Acknowledges the need to pay particular attention to the impact of industrial restructuring on employment, particularly long-term employment, and regional planning;

3.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council and Commission.
