European Parliament resolution on Human Rights in Sudan

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 115 of its Rules of Procedure,

  • A.Concerned at the sentence of death by stoning for adultery passed on Ms Sadia Idris Fadul, 22 years old and Ms Amouna Abdallah Daldoum, 23 years old, on 13 February and 6 March 2007 respectively,
  • B.Whereas, according to human rights organisation both Sadia and Amouna were subjected to a very unfair trial in which they were not given access to lawyers and were not given a chance to adequately defend themselves in their mother tongue,
  • C.Whereas both women are married with children and currently detained in a women's prison in Wad Madani, Gazeera state,
  • D.Whereas both women have appealed against the judgment,
  • E.Whereas the death penalty is the ultimate violation of the right to life as enshrined in the Universal declaration of human rights,
  • F.Whereas sentencing to death by stoning contravenes Sudan's obligation under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,
  • G.Whereas the Sudanese government is signatory of the Cotonou ACP-EU cooperation agreement, which is based on respect for human rights, democratic principles and rule of law,
  • 1.Calls on the Sudanese government to repeal the death sentence and guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of Ms Sadia Idries Fadul and Ms Amuna Abdallah Daldoum,
  • 2.Calls on the Sudanese government to respect human rights in accordance with international human rights standards, such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political rights to which Sudan is a State Party since 1986,
  • 3.Considers that the government of Sudan has an obligation to protect the right of every individual to life, liberty and security by law and calls therefore for all appropriate measures to be taken to modify and abolish existing laws, regulations, customs and practices that constitute discrimination against women including inhuman, degrading treatment or punishment,
  • 4.Calls on the Commission and the Council to take all necessary measures to stop the death sentence by stoning passed on Ms Amouna Abdallah Daldoum and Ms Sadia Idries,
  • 5.Calls on the African Union to stop the death sentence against Sadia Idries Fadul and Ms Amuna Abdallah Daldoum in accordance to its Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples rights' on the Rights of Women in Africa, which recognises that women shall be entitled to respect for their life and the integrity and security of their person,
  • 6.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Member States, the African Union and the government of Sudan.
