on the recent events in Myanmar

European Parliament resolution on the recent events in Myanmar
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 103(2) of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas Myanmar has been gripped in the past few days by its biggest tide of political and social protest in 20 years, led by Buddhist monks taking a stand against the increase in the cost of living and in support of democratic political reforms,
B. re-endorsing its previous resolutions calling for a democratic system to be established in Burma and condemning the serious human rights violations perpetrated by the ruling military junta in power for the last 45 years,
1. Expresses its support for all those who have taken to the streets in Rangoon and elsewhere in Myanmar, to press for political and social reforms to aid the civilian population, who have been reduced to severe poverty by 45 years of military dictatorship;
2. Demands that the military junta refrain from mounting any military or police operation aimed at cracking down on the protesters;
3. Calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners in Myanmar;
4. Condemns the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) for its relentless suppression of the Burmese people over 45 years and its total failure to make any significant move towards democracy;
5. Urges the cessation of the current so-called constitutional process and its replacement by a fully representative national convention including the National League for Democracy (NLD) and other political parties and groups, taking account of the recommendations made by the UN Secretary-General to transform it into an inclusive and democratic constitution-formulating process;
6. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, and the Burmese authorities.
