Motion for a European Parliament resolution on EU research into enhanced geothermal systems
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Directive 2001/77/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 September 2001 on the promotion of electricity produced from renewable energy sources in the internal electricity market,
– having regard to Directive 2003/54/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 June 2003 concerning common rules for the internal market in electricity and repealing Directive 96/92/EC,
– having regard to the European Commission’s ‘Renewable Energy Road Map’,
– having regard to the EU’s general objective of achieving a mandatory target for renewable energies as a proportion of the Community’s overall energy consumption,
– having regard to the substantial benefits of enhanced geothermal systems,
– having regard to its resolution of 14 February 2007 on climate change, which highlighted the important role that renewable energy sources and energy efficient technologies have to play,
– having regard to Rule 113 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas geothermal energy is an indigenous and environmentally‑friendly form of energy and geothermal resources are suitable for different types of use, including electricity production and household heating and cooling,
1. Considers that the Member States need to take a series of measures to expand the exploitation of geothermal resources and increase the presence of European operators on the world geothermal market;
2. Calls on the Commission to address the issue of the development of EGS (enhanced geothermal systems) technology.
