European Parliament resolution on Indonesia: including attacks on minorities
The European Parliament,
- having regard to its previous resolutions on Indonesia,
- having regard to the United Nations Declaration on the elimination of all forms of intolerance and discrimination based on religion or belief,
- having regard to Rule 122(5) of its Rules of Procedure,
A. Whereas Indonesia was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council in May 2011;
B. Whereas there has been an increase in the number of attacks against religious minorities, but also against peaceful political dissidents,
C. Whereas the rights to freedom of expression, opinion and peaceful assembly are guaranteed under the international covenant on civil and political rights to which Indonesia is a state party,
1. Denounces all acts of sectarian violence committed in Indonesia, in particular to the religious minorities such as Christians and Ahmadiyah, the increase of cases of intimidation, attacks and arrests against human rights defenders, journalists and political activist,
2. Condemns all acts of torture or ill-treatment by police on peaceful political activists, and urges measures to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice in fair trials and the victims receive reparations;
3. Calls on the Indonesian authorities to conduct investigations on those acts and to bring the responsible to justice;
4. Regards the creation of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights as a welcome step towards a more comprehensive approach and the more effective implementation of human rights standards across the region;
5. Calls on the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Commission and the Council to raise the issue of the human rights situation in the context of its relevant political dialogues;
6. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Government and Parliament of Indonesia.
