23.11.2011

pursuant to Rule 120 of the Rules of Procedure

Sergio Paolo Francesco Silvestris

B7‑0616/2011

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the promotion of measures to help workers under 25

The European Parliament,

–   having regard to its recent resolutions on the matter,

–   having regard to Rule 120 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas young people under the age of 25 seeking employment remain unemployed for long periods – more than a year in 44% of cases, according to statistics compiled by the research institute Datagiovani for the newspaper ‘Il Sole 24 Ore’,

B.  whereas the right to work and the right to fair pay must be guaranteed by the European Union for all young people in Europe,

C. whereas of all the 33 OECD states Italy is penultimate on the ‘labour age gap’ list, which indicates the disparity between under 25s and all other people in the job race, taking into account rates of unemployment, employment and labour market participation and of the percentage of people in long-term unemployment,

1.  Calls on the Commission to launch a targeted awareness campaign aimed at businesses, in order to promote the employment of young people;

2.  Calls on the Commission to set up a project geared towards the elimination, or at least the lowering, of barriers to entering a labour market in which opportunities for those under 25 are increasingly scarce.
