Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the use of sustainable methods of transporting goods in old town centres
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 120 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas reducing CO2 emissions is a European Union objective;
B. whereas the old centres of hundreds of European towns and cities contain churches, monuments, squares and other buildings of historical and artistic importance, and whereas pollution often damages the buildings’ facades and alters their appearance, sometimes irreversibly;
C. whereas methane-powered, electric and LPG vehicles would be less damaging and would cause less pollution than petrol-powered vehicles;
1. Calls on the Commission to foster the increased use of sustainable means of transport in old town centres and areas of particular historic, cultural and artistic importance;
2. Calls on the Commission to carry out awareness-raising campaigns and implement policies designed to encourage people to use environmentally-friendly means of transport, such as electric cars, in towns and cities.
