B.  whereas although the organisation and supply of health services are competences of the individual Member States, the European Union imparts added value by coordinating the actions of the various Member States in order to address shared problems such as demographic ageing and the health problems connected with this;

C. whereas cataracts affect 95 % of patients aged over 65 as this is primarily an age-related condition;

1.  Calls on the Commission to examine closely, promote and maybe provide funding for a recent innovation, an intraocular projection system that will enable the surgeon, through use of a virtual viewfinder during cataract surgery, to be extremely precise in the positioning of the intraocular lenses. Using this new system the surgeon can see while operating under the microscope a superimposed image projected within the retina which is able to guide him in positioning the lens optimally within the patient’s eye.
