B7‑0094/2013

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on a proposal for transparent labelling for correct information on the origin, quality and traceability of food products

The European Parliament,

–   having regard to Directive 2000/13/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 March 2000 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the labelling, presentation and advertising of foodstuffs,

–   having regard to Rule 120 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. having regard to the risks deriving from the presence of horsemeat in packets which were supposed to contain beef;

B.  whereas the incorrect labelling could pose health risks due to the undeclared substances in the packets, such as medicines used for racehorses;

C. having regard to the growing demand from EU citizens for greater transparency with regard to the origin and quality of products;

D. having regard to the advisability of stating clearly all information on the origin and characteristics of the product (origin and substances used for cultivation or breeding), also describing all steps in the chain of all products, from producer to consumer, including those that have been excluded to date;

1.  Calls on the Council and the Commission to implement a common system of transparent labelling for all foodstuffs, whether or not they have been packaged, including all types of meat, to ensure that proper and comprehensive information is provided on the origin, quality, ingredients and traceability of the products.
