MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on recent violence in Iraq

European Parliament resolution on recent violence in Iraq

(2013/2874(RSP))

The European Parliament,

–   Having regard to its previous resolutions on the situation in Iraq,

–   having regard to Rule 122 of its Rules of Procedure,

 

- Whereas a minimum of 887 civilians were killed ( including 127 civilian police) a further

1957 were injured ( including 199 civilian police) in ongoing armed violence in Iraq during

September 2013;

 

-Whereas the number of attacks rose sharply after the Iraqi army raided a protest camp in

Hawija on 23 April 2013. Overall, 712 people were killed in April according UN figures,

making it the nation deadliest month in five years;

 

-Whereas conditions continued to deteriorate in May when UNAMI reported at least 1,045

Iraqis were killed and another 2.397wounded in acts of terrorism and acts of violence and

similar death tolls were recorded in July and August, as 2013 was on track to be the deadliest

year for the country since 2008;

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Vice-President of the

Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the

Council, the Commission, the Governments ant the Parliaments of the Member States, the

Government and Council of Representatives of Iraq, the Secretary-General of the of the

United Nations and the United Nations Human Rights.
