Motion for a European Parliament resolution on bad diets and the associated health risks
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas researchers at the University of Edinburgh have published, in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention, a study assessing the effects on health of around 170 different types of food – including fruit, vegetables, meat and fish – and of numerous high‑calorie snacks, such as chocolate and crisps, and of carbonated drinks;
B. whereas the findings of the study confirm the health risks associated with a lack of physical activity, and also raise new concerns over sugary and fatty snacks, which children in particular consume in large quantities;
1. Calls on the Commission to further develop research in this field and to promote awareness among the European public of the importance of maintaining a proper and healthy diet.
