Motion for a European Parliament resolution on a new strain of avian influenza, A-H5N6, affecting poultry in Asia
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas a strain of bird flu virus – A-H5N6 – has contaminated poultry in South-East Asia;
B. whereas influenza viruses are constantly recombining, creating potential new threats;
C. whereas, according to the FAO’s Chief Veterinary Officer, A-H5N6 is of particular concern, both because it has been found in places very far apart and because it is highly pathogenic;
1. Calls on the Commission to state what containment strategy it will adopt to prevent the virus affecting poultry in Europe.
