MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on infringement of the law on the transport of animals

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on infringement of the law on the transport of animals

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas animals are carried on Europe’s roads every day, both for breeding purposes and for slaughter;

B.     whereas, despite the requirements laid down in Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005, which came in to force on 5 January 2007, animals are still being mistreated in transport and left in a very poor state of health;

C.     whereas during checks carried out by Italian traffic police on 917 vehicles this year, 535 infringements were found to have been committed, 110 of which were breaches of the above regulation;

1.      Calls on the Commission to step up preventive action and checks on compliance with the rules on the transport of animals, in order to protect animal health and welfare and enhance food safety.
