Motion for a European Parliament resolution on protecting traditional Italian products: sambuca

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas sambuca is a traditional Italian liqueur that meets specific quality and production requirements;

B.     whereas under paragraph 38 of Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 110/2008 the name sambuca may be used only for colourless aniseed-flavoured liqueurs with a minimum sugar content of 350 grams per litre, a natural anethole content of not less than one gram and not more than two grams per litre and a minimum alcoholic strength by volume of 38%; whereas paragraph 32 of that annex lays down conditions that must be met and specific production methods that must be employed in order for the name sambuca to be used as part of a ‘compound term’ on the labels of spirit drinks;

C.     whereas flavoured liqueurs that do not meet the above production requirements have been sold as sambuca in various Member States – in particular the United Kingdom – for many years;

D.     whereas although Member States have a responsibility to ensure compliance with the rules in this area such liqueurs are still being sold, to the detriment of Italy’s sambuca producers and of consumers;

1.      Calls on the Commission to ensure that the above regulation is complied with;

2.      Calls on the Commission to coordinate the investigations and other measures being carried out in the Member States, in order to ensure that genuinely effective action is at last taken to protect the interests of both producers and consumers.
