Motion for a European Parliament resolution on strengthening European forestry policy
The European Parliament,
– having regard to the Commission Communication to the Council and the European Parliament (COM (2005) 0084),
– having regard to the objectives set at the Lisbon European Council (March 2000) and Gothenburg (June 2001),
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. having regard the inestimable value of forests in both biological and economic terms;
B. having regard to the advanced age of European forests, which slows their capacity to absorb CO2;
C. having regard to the value of old forests, which provide a valuable habitat and protect biodiversity;
D. having regard to the need, however, for a substantial rejuvenation of forests to ensure sufficient absorption of CO2;
E. having regard to the need for streamlined, uniformly applicable and flexible forest management procedures tailored to the needs of the various European regions;
1. Calls on the Commission to encourage the expansion of the programme with a new and wide-ranging set of common rules, in line with the objectives already laid down by the Council.
