Motion for a European Parliament resolution on conflicts of interest affecting scientific experts in the Directorate-General for Health and Consumers

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas, according to the report drawn up by the Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO), two-thirds of scientific experts in DG SANCO may be affected by conflicts of interest owing to their links with industry;

B.     whereas it appears that many of these experts have had direct links with industry as consultants, receiving direct payment of fees;

C.     whereas it has emerged that 67% of the 57 scientific committee members called on to carry out an assessment of parabens are linked to industries with a direct or indirect interest in these chemical substances;

1.      Calls on the Commission to review its internal rules governing scientific committees.
