Motion for a European Parliament resolution on a strategy to revive book reading in Europe  

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas according to a survey carried out by the Italian Publishers’ Association (AIE) and to data collected by the Italian National Institute for Statistics (ISTAT), 820 000 people stopped reading books in Italy last year; whereas Italy has seen a dramatic decline in the number of people reading over the last four years; whereas currently, almost 60 % of Italians do not even read one book a year;

1.      Calls on the Commission to launch an awareness campaign to promote reading in Europe;

2.      Calls on the Commission not only to take measures to increase reading levels but, above all, to increase the consumption of books, as tools of knowledge and much more.
