on issues relating to the tannery sector

Matteo Salvini, Mara Bizzotto

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on issues relating to the tannery sector

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas the tannery sector is an Italian sector of excellence of world renown, with exports accounting for around 70% of output; whereas Italian firms have complained about the lack of reciprocity and unfair competition from countries such as China, which impose restrictions on raw material exports that make it very difficult for European producers to acquire the raw skins they need;

B.     whereas such restrictions are not imposed on Asian firms, which may freely import raw material from Europe, while it is hard for Italian producers to import the raw material and they are virtually prevented from exporting their finished products to Asia;

1.      Calls on the Commission to take action to ensure that Italian companies enjoy conditions of reciprocity in respect of raw material purchases in those countries that have no difficulty in obtaining their supplies from Europe;

2.      Calls on the Commission to take supervisory action to prevent access to the European market of Asian tannery products which are the result of processing that does not comply with EU environmental standards and which poses a threat to consumer health.
