Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the rise in the number of abortions in India based on the sex of the unborn child
B8-0325/2015

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas in India the number of abortions carried out on account of the sex of the unborn child is constantly rising and whereas, according to a study by the British medical journal ‘The Lancet’, records show that between 4 million and 12 million female foetuses have been aborted in India in the past 30 years, 50 % of them in the past decade alone;

B.     whereas in 1961 the Indian Government approved an ad hoc law prohibiting doctors from informing future mothers of the sex of their unborn child in order to curb female infanticide, but illegal abortions and infanticide continue to be common practice, especially among families in the poorest social classes;

1.      Calls on the Commission to set up a round table for dialogue with the Indian Government in order to find tangible solutions to these practices within the framework of relations between the European Union and India.
