Motion for a European Parliament resolution on including education in efforts to build a sustainable Energy Union  

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to the Commission Green Paper entitled ‘A 2030 framework for climate and energy policies’,

–       having regard to the joint report by the Commission and the ILO entitled ‘Towards a greener economy: the social dimensions’,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas energy saving and efficiency are the fastest and cheapest routes to addressing issues such as energy security, external dependence, high prices and environmental concerns;

B.     whereas the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors have been growing despite the crisis and are expected to bring further increases in the EU’s GDP;

C.     whereas actions are needed to decrease the environmental impact of energy production, transport and use by developing education and awareness-raising programmes and initiatives on environment-friendly energy options and energy efficiency;

1.      Calls on the Commission to further enhance its support for initiatives to improve the provision of information for citizens on renewable energy projects and involving them in such projects;

2.      Calls on the Commission to speed up capacity building in the education sector in order to foster creative and innovative attitudes and behaviour aimed at supporting new solutions in the area of secure, clean and efficient energy by developing teaching materials and e-learning platforms.
