B8-0598/2015

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on infections caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas research by the UK Department responsible for managing national emergencies has highlighted the fact that at least 80 000 people are dangerously at risk from the spread of infections caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics (Antimicrobial Resistance Infection, o AMR) and that AMR is jeopardising the outcome of even the most minor operations;

B.     whereas in Italy, too, this problem is worrying on the increase and, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Italy has the distinction of being in the group of countries with the highest percentage of resistance to almost all bacteria;

C.     whereas doctors are unable to treat these infections and can only try treatments with antibiotics no longer in use because of their toxicity;

D.     whereas the aggressiveness of these infections results in very high mortality rates, ranging from 50 % to 70 % of cases;

1.      Calls on the Commission to take action to curb and prevent what could possibly become an EU-wide epidemic.
