Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the fact that EU external policy is at odds with Italy's priorities and interests
B8-0614/2015

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas the sanctions the EU has imposed on Russia have cost Italian businesses EUR 1 billion in contracts that have already been signed and can no longer be honoured;

B.     whereas Italy is the Russian Federation's fourth largest trading partner and whereas trade volumes between the two countries fell by fully 25% in the last quarter alone;

C.     whereas Italy has consistently maintained extremely good relations with Russia and its people, and whereas EU external policy is jeopardising this special relationship;

D.     whereas the decisions taken by the EU are clearly at odds with Italy's interests;

E.     whereas Ukraine is not an EU Member State or a member of NATO;

1.      Acknowledges that there is no valid legal reason for Italy to feel itself obliged to follow an EU external policy that is clearly at odds with its priorities and interests;

2.      Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission and to the European Council.
