Mara Bizzotto

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on revising migration policies in Europe

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas a former Frontex advisor has stated in an enquiry by The Daily Telegraph that human traffickers in Libya are fully aware of the large numbers of vessels deployed to rescue migrants, first under Operation Mare Nostrum operation and now under Operation Triton, and always have been;

B.     whereas those operations are said to have caused an increase in the number of migrants willing to try to reach Europe, amid claims that criminal organisations are even contacting the Italian authorities anonymously in advance to tell them when boats are departing so that they can take action and assume the responsibility for rescue efforts;

1.      Calls on the Commission to launch a fact‑finding investigation to check whether Frontex actually knew about the situation described above;

2.      Calls on the Commission to frame new policies to address the migration emergency afflicting Italy and Europe.
