Motion for a European Parliament resolution on combating damage to the marine environment and fish stocks caused by ghost nets

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas ghost nets include all fishing gear lost in storms or strong currents or when they become tangled;

B.  whereas these nets continue for years to capture many species of fish (wild salmon, tuna, swordfish, sharks) and also marine mammals, turtles and birds;

C.  whereas these ghost nets harm the marine environment and fish stocks and sometimes pose a threat to vessel safety;

D.  whereas fishing nets today are composed of highly resistant synthetic materials;

1.  Calls on the Commission to subsidise the development of sustainable fishing equipment made from biodegradable components;

2.  Calls on the Commission to provide financial incentives to encourage fishermen to retrieve ghost nets they have lost or come across by chance while out at sea;

3.  Calls on the Member States to equip their ports with the facilities to collect and dispose of obsolete or damaged fishing equipment;

4.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution, together with the names of the signatories, to the Commission, the Council and the Member States.
