Motion for a European Parliament resolution on child obesity
The European Parliament,
– having regard to the alarm raised by the WHO,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas child obesity is assuming global epidemic proportions, threatening to affect all populations at economic and social level; whereas the number of obese children under five years of age could be increased from over 42 million in 2013 to 70 million in 2025;
B. whereas, like any disorder, obesity adversely affects to a more or less serious degree the lives of not only sufferers, but also family members and, indirectly, society as a whole;
C. whereas obesity undermines children's self-esteem and their image of themselves, frequently leading them to display typical symptoms such as unwillingness to participate in activities with their peers;
D. whereas efforts to tackle the problem simply by raising awareness of eating habits have proved ineffective and counterproductive;
1. Calls on the Commission to step up its efforts to provide information and raise awareness about this social problem at European level.
