pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

on the generation of electricity from citrus fruit processing waste

Aldo Patriciello

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the generation of electricity from citrus fruit processing waste

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Regulation (EC) No 663/2009,

–  having regard to Directive 2009/28/EC,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas importance is attached to the development of renewable energy in Europe;

B.  whereas the disposal of the pulp, pips and peel that result from citrus fruit processing comes at a high cost;

C.  whereas the Sicilian ‘energy from citrus fruits’ project has been a success, with a pilot installation now generating electrical energy from citrus fruit waste; and indeed it has been calculated that 20 ‘digesters’ of this type would be enough to resolve the entire problem of citrus fruit waste in Sicily;

1.  Calls on the Commission to propose the monitoring of the results, to commission a study into the effects that a system of this kind could have on a larger scale, and to promote similar projects using, for example, bergamot or other citrus fruits.
