on protecting girls in Europe and worldwide

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on protecting girls in Europe and worldwide  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to UN General Assembly resolution 66/170,

–  having regard to the CEDAW Convention adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1979,

–  having regard to Articles 2, 3 and 4 of the ECHR,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas around 5 000 children worldwide have been subjected to violence in the last year alone, six out of 10 of whom were female; whereas 68 million girls have been enslaved;

B.  whereas the 11 October is International Day of the Girl Child and this year's theme is 'The power of the adolescent girl: vision for 2030', highlighting the commitment made to protecting girls in the context of the Millennium Development Goals for 2030;

C.  whereas the protection of girls is a global concern which must nevertheless be tackled at national and EU level;

1.  Calls on the Commission to propose action programmes and funding for all activities which help to protect girls in Europe and worldwide, to foster dialogue on the issue and to establish a legislative framework for the protection of girls.
