pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

B8-1086/2015

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on human rights

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights, in particular the preamble thereto,

–  having regard to the Treaty on European Union, in particular Articles 2, 3, 6, and 21 thereof,

–  having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, in particular Article 205 thereof,

–  having regard to the Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy (2015-2019),

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas, according to Amnesty International, 2014 was a ‘catastrophic’ year for millions of people denied their human rights;

B.  whereas ‘disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind’, to quote the preamble to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;

C.  whereas there can be no question of achieving the Millennium Development Goals if that process excludes the promotion of human rights and whereas, therefore, respect for human rights is essential in order to guarantee development;

1.  Calls on the Commission to urge Member States to make human rights their priority, especially in view of the current refugee crisis.
