on promoting a study and a research fund with the aim of curing HIV/AIDS

Aldo Patriciello

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on promoting a study and a research fund with the aim of curing HIV/AIDS

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights,

–  having regard to Article 11 of the European Social Charter,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas, on the basis of WHO data, the spread of HIV has increased in Europe, despite the progress made in medical treatment and prevention policies (in 2013, some 136 000 new cases were diagnosed between Europe and Central Asia);

B.  whereas, with the migration crisis and the arrival in Europe of people, some of whom come from developing countries, the risk of spread of the virus could increase;

C.  whereas efforts to combat the spread of the virus must involve Member States but above all the European system, in order to ensure coordination of policies and more effective action throughout the territory of the European Union;

D.  whereas these efforts cannot take the place of continuous progress in research, and having regard moreover to the results achieved by Italian researchers in Trento with regard to the protein Serinc5, which is capable of representing a natural defence against HIV;

1.  Calls on the Commission to propose a study concerning the cure of HIV/AIDS, and possibly a research fund to pay for such therapy, as the research performed hitherto is already out of date in view of the new, developing situation.
