Motion for a European Parliament resolution on assisted suicide  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Articles 2 and 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights,

–  having regard to the preamble to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas in California the option of what is termed assisted suicide, allowing terminally ill patients to end their lives, is being legalised;

B.  whereas in many European countries assisted suicide is a subject of heated debate and whereas opinions are not only divided, but also clashing;

C.  whereas individual personal freedom of choice is a core value of the EU;

D.  whereas protecting citizens from physical suffering has to be a priority for EU action;

1.  Calls on the Commission to propose that an up-to-date public opinion survey be conducted in order to provide a basis for such guidelines as might be necessary to ensure that individual wishes are respected.
