MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on the traceability of fish products in Brussels

4.11.2015

pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

Aldo Patriciello

B8-1224/2015

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the traceability of fish products in Brussels

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Regulation (EC) No 178/2002,

–  having regard to Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas, according to a study carried out by Oceana Europa, in the city of Brussels one fish out of three that are served in restaurants (especially sushis bars and the canteens of EU institutions such as the Commission and Parliament) is passed off as being of better quality and of a better kind than it actually is;

B.  whereas this situation damages not only consumers, by defrauding them, but also the environment, as it does not ensure that our seas are managed 'sustainably';

C.  whereas, in actual fact, EU legislation makes provision for an anti-fraud system and clear labelling measures;

D.  whereas the EU is responsible for ensuring that the rules it makes are correctly applied and fully complied with;

1.  Calls on the Commission to take specific action to resolve this problem and to enforce anti-fraud and labelling legislation effectively.
