Motion for a European Parliament resolution on European Cravat Day
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas Europe is the birthplace of the cravat, the fashion for which which was spread by Croatian cavalrymen in the 17th century, and in 1643 Louis XIII established the 'Royal-Croates' regiment, which Louis XIV later renamed the 'Royal-Cravates' regiment;
B. whereas the tie – an elegant strip of fabric characteristic of the uniform of Croatian soldiers at the French royal court – has in time become an indispensable item of clothing, gradually winning over Europe and the whole world;
C. whereas for centuries the tie was characteristic of Europeans, namely people with a European spirit and values, and has gradually become a symbol of European fashion;
D. whereas the tie is a symbol of dignity and celebration, respect and self-confidence, success and diplomacy;
E. whereas there is already a tradition whereby each state holding the Presidency of the EU Council presents a tie at the beginning of their term, which means that the tie is even considered a symbol of the EU;
1. Calls on the Commission to establish a European Cravat Day in order to recognise this stylish item of clothing as an element of Europe's cultural heritage, identity, communication and design, with a view to maintaining and strengthening interpersonal links between Europeans, as well as their links with the rest of the world.
