    Motion for a European Parliament resolution on biodiversity

    The European Parliament,

    –  having regard to Directive 2009/147/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 November 2009 on the conservation of wild birds[1],

    –  having regard to Directive 2008/99/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008 on the protection of the environment through criminal law[2],

    –  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

    A. whereas the last meeting of the European Parliament’s ENVI committee discussed the existence of a full-blown ‘biodiversity crisis’ and the importance of protecting natural resources, both fauna or flora, in Europe;

    B. whereas Europe has comprehensive legislation in this area and therefore is the guarantor of environmental protection;

    C. whereas many civil society organisations are active and involved in environmental issues and have a valuable contribution to make;

    1.  Calls on the Commission to encourage the involvement of civil society in protecting the environment, not only financially but also through the creation of a European register of all organisations for the protection of the environment and biodiversity, in order to make it easier for citizens to get involved.
