B8-1391/2015

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the Turkish military occupation of Cyprus

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas Turkey is engaged in the military occupation of part of an EU Member State;

B.  whereas the Turkish occupation of Cyprus is a blatant violation of international law;

C.  whereas diplomatic negotiations which have taken place over the years have proved ineffectual;

D.  whereas Turkey has been openly supporting Islamic State for some time, through the purchase of oil from areas occupied by ISIS and through military support for Islamic militants in Syria;

E.  whereas these attitudes are in blatant conflict with EU policies and appear to support interests which are clearly opposed to those of the European Union;

F.  whereas the alleged Russian occupation of the Crimea has led to the EU imposing sanctions on Russia;

1.  Calls on the Commission to evaluate, propose and implement the appropriate sanctions against Turkey in order to put pressure on the latter to comply with international law.
