Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the Turkish military occupation of Cyprus
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas Turkey is engaged in the military occupation of part of an EU Member State;
B. whereas the Turkish occupation of Cyprus is a blatant violation of international law;
C. whereas diplomatic negotiations which have taken place over the years have proved ineffectual;
D. whereas Turkey has been openly supporting Islamic State for some time, through the purchase of oil from areas occupied by ISIS and through military support for Islamic militants in Syria;
E. whereas these attitudes are in blatant conflict with EU policies and appear to support interests which are clearly opposed to those of the European Union;
F. whereas the alleged Russian occupation of the Crimea has led to the EU imposing sanctions on Russia;
1. Calls on the Commission to evaluate, propose and implement the appropriate sanctions against Turkey in order to put pressure on the latter to comply with international law.
