on local climate initiatives

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on local climate initiatives  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Regulation (EU) No 1293/2013 on the establishment of a Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE),

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas there is a network of 82 cities, called C40, which since the 2009 Copenhagen COP 15 has carried out 10 000 actions to reduce emissions, for instance by developing waste sorting and public transport or investing in energy-efficient building renovation, low-energy lighting and heating systems, and measures to avoid waste of natural resources;

B.  whereas bottom-up initiatives set a good example and are a promising avenue for climate change mitigation and environmental protection;

C.  whereas, especially now that the COP 21 negotiations are under way, the EU needs to be working towards those goals:

1.  Calls on the Commission to provide financial incentives for bottom-up projects to tackle climate problems and for exchanges of best practice among Member States.
