Motion for a European Parliament resolution on depression  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 35 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union,

–  having regard to Article 168 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU),

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the incidence of depression among EU citizens is costing the EU economy an estimated EUR 92 billion, 54 billion of which are related to indirect costs due to absences from work;

B.  whereas even though these data show how widespread this disorder is, only a minority of those affected undergoes the treatment necessary in order to recover;

C.  whereas such a situation is harmful not only in terms of people's health, but also because of its economic impact, due to the expenditure required in order to deal with issues such as absence from work and inappropriate treatment received;

1.  Calls on the Commission to propose an up-to-date study on the subject and an information programme for citizens, particularly as regards the causes and consequences of depression and the treatment available.
