on relations with Turkey

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on relations with Turkey  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to the communication from the Commission of October 2014 entitled ‘Enlargement Strategy and Main Challenges 2014-2015’,

–  having regard to Turkey’s 2013 progress report,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas for five years Turkey has constantly supported various armed Islamist terrorist groups which are causing chaos in Syria;

B.  whereas Turkey has shot down a Russian fighter aircraft which was attacking those terrorist groups;

C.  whereas there are many indications that Turkey is buying oil from the Islamic State terrorist group;

D.  whereas since July 2015 the Turkish Government has committed many atrocities against its own population, particularly the Kurdish and Alevi minorities;

1.  Calls on the European Union to immediately freeze the 14 chapters in the negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the Union which are currently still open;

2.  Calls on the European Union to institute economic sanctions against Turkey;

3.  Calls on the Vice-President to ask NATO to exclude Turkey from the organisation;

4.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council and the Member States.
