Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the risks posed by the strong growth in uncertified UHT milk imports to the detriment of Italian-produced milk
B8-0003/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas Coldiretti National Farmers Confederation sounded the alarm on 10 November 2015, stating that 3.5 million litres of low-quality milk were reaching Italy every day to to be transformed into Italian dairy products, with no indication of the milk's origin, deceiving both consumers and producers of fresh Italian milk; whereas three cartons of UHT milk out of four in Italian supermarkets contain uncertified foreign milk;

B.  whereas this 'milk war' is generating huge economic and employment losses in Italy caused by the unfair competition of cheap, imported milk, amounting to 10% of Italian production, whereby Italian fresh milk producers are struggling to keep their farms due to the insufficient compensation they receive for each litre of milk;

C.  whereas the public consultation carried out by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture found that 89% of consumers consider the lack of origin labelling for dairy products to be misleading;

1.  Calls on the Commission to implement measures to safeguard certified quality products from the Italian dairy sector;

2.  Calls on the Commission, in addition, to step up its monitoring to ensure transparency in the milk and dairy products supply chain for EU consumers.
