MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on the labelling of meat from animals killed in ritual slaughter

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the labelling of meat from animals killed in ritual slaughter

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to paragraph 49 of its resolution of 4 July 2012 on the European Union Strategy for the Protection and Welfare of Animals 2012–2015[1],

–  having regard to recital 50 and Article 3(1) of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 October 2011 on the provision of food information to consumers[2],

–  having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, in particular Article 169 on consumer protection and Article 191,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas, in accordance with the precautionary principle, consumers have a right to information about food products;

B.   whereas meat from animals killed in ritual slaughter can pose a risk to health;

C.   whereas a number of scientific studies have shown that ritual slaughter causes animal suffering;

D.   whereas only part of the ritually slaughtered animal is consumed by the religious community concerned, while the rest is sold for general consumption;

1.   Calls on the Commission to produce statistics showing how much of the meat sold in Europe is from animals killed in ritual slaughter;

2.   Calls on the Commission to introduce a labelling system that indicates, in all cases, whether all or part of a meat product comes from an animal killed in ritual slaughter;

3.   Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission.
