Motion for a European Parliament resolution on information for depositors in the context of the entry into force of the Single Resolution Mechanism
B8-0234/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Directive 2014/59/EU of 15 May 2014,

–  having regard to Regulation (EU) No 806/2014 of 15 July 2014,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas, as of 1 January 2016, in the event of a banking crisis under Banking Union rules the resolution authorities can tap deposits in excess of EUR 100 000 held by savers with a given financial institution;

B.  whereas, therefore, persons who hold or open a bank account should be informed of the risks involved;

C.  whereas EU legislation already makes the information investors receive contingent on the level of risk inherent in the financial product they are purchasing;

1.  Calls on the Commission to make it compulsory for banks to inform account holders of the risks they will be exposed to under the new Banking Union legislation should a resolution procedure be required;

2.  Takes the view that banks should be required to issue this information both to existing customers and to those opening deposit accounts.
